Bikini Kill, one of the most influential feminist punk bands, is coming to Brooklyn in June! It might be months away but if you want tickets, you probably want to start planning now. Reuniting for their first full shows and tour in 22 years, tickets are sure to sell out.
Since you are planning ahead, why not plan out a full evening of dinner and a show! Bikini Kill is booked to perform at the Kings Theater in Ditmas Park which is one of Brooklyn’s top neighborhoods for dining. There are also some great bars you might want to hit up after the show.
Below we have a bit more on the band, the venue, and dinner options in Ditmas Park.
If you haven’t heard of Bikini Kill, you have missed out. This iconic ‘90s female punk band was known for their strong political views and for taking their live shows to the extreme. Most of all, they were known for encouraging women to reclaim their space, not just in the punk world but in all spaces.
Originally formed in Olympia, WA in 1990, the band first started touring in 1991. They toured not only the United States but also Europe, Australia, and Japan. In total, Bikini Kill released a demo tape, three singles, two EP's, and two LP's.
The band finally broke up in 1997 but not before making a significant impact on the world of punk and music in general. The band is credited with launching the Riot Grrrl movement, coining the term Girl Power, and inspiring countless women to form their own bands.
The original band members - Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail, and Kathi Wilcox - will perform along with new guitarist Erica Dawn Lyle, replacing guitarist Billy Karren. While only three shows were originally announced, the band has added a few additional shows to their tour.
Here in Brooklyn you can catch the band at the Kings Theater in Ditmas Park June 4th and 5th.
An incredible show demands a great venue and Bikini Kill have booked one of Brooklyn's best theaters. The Kings Theater, originally built in 1929 has been expertly restored to its former glory. Reopened in 2015, the performing arts venue is known for hosting amazing shows and one-of-a-kind performances. The theater is also centrally located in the Ditmas Park neighborhood. As of now, Bikini Kill’s final two shows will be hosted here and knowing the band, they are sure to be memorable. Back in the ‘90s, Bikini Kill band members were not shy about creating a female-focused space at their live shows. From talking about sexual harassment and abuse to their iconic “girls to the front” slogan, we are sure the Kings Theater show will stand up to some of the band’s best ‘90s performances.
